Electric Power - Definition, Formula, Unit and Others Power Formula Class 10 Science

Definition and Formula of Electric Power

Electric power is defined as the amount of electric energy consumed in a circuit per unit of time.

If W be the amount of electric energy consumed in a circuit in t second then the electric power is given by

➡ P=W/t

Since W=electric energy =VIt

➡ P=VIt/t

➡ or P=VI

Thus, electric power is defined as the product of potential difference applied across the circuit and current flowing through it.

Other Formula of Electic Power

➡ P=I²R

➡ P=V²/R

Unit of Power

SI Unit of Power is Watt and It represented by W

We Know  P=VI

From this formula 1 Watt = 1 volt x 1 ampere = 1VA

Definition of Watt

Electric power is said to be 1 watt if 1 ampere current flows through a circuit having a 1-volt potential difference.

Other Units of Electric Power

1 Kilowatt(kW) = 10³ W

1 Megawatt(MW) = 10 W

1 Gigawatt (GW) = 10 W

1 Horse Power (H.P) = 746 W (Horse Power is Practical Unit of Power)
